Way back in 2017, the New York Times listed the best American cities for pets. What was named top dog? It wasn’t the wilds of Boulder, Colorado, or the sandy beaches of Honolulu or the hipster dog-walking mecca of Portland, Oregon. No, according to “All the News That’s Fit to Print,” the Great Dane of pet cities is…Scottsdale, Arizona. Because of “abundant pet-related businesses and services, as well as pet-friendly indoor and outdoor space,” the Phoenix-adjacent hamlet bested a hundred cities in the rankings. The Times cited a study done by WalletHub that ranked Scottsdale first in the country for “pet health and wellness” and second overall for “outdoor pet friendliness.” Here are some other cool reasons to take your dog to the desert…and maybe stay there!
Whether looking for a travel destination or a permanent relocation, a pet lover won’t be barking up the wrong tree in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Four-footed fun The greater Scottsdale area features six off-leash dog parks and (if you don’t mind leashing up) almost 25 percent of the city acreage is dedicated to parkland, with the average public park stretching for 13.5 acres. Additionally, Scottsdale is home to more than 400 miles of hiking trails and was named one of the top 15 hiking destinations by National Geographic. For people who like getting outside with their best friend, Scottsdale is where it’s at. Out of the ordinary If you’re looking for some special experiences for your pup, Sprinkles bakery and ice cream shop sells doggie-friendly cupcakes. And Scramble is a breakfast joint that provides guests with dog-specific water dishes while guests dine. At McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, you can take your dog on a train ride or leash him or her up and explore 30 acres of train-related fun. Afterward, you can hit Lakeview Coffee, which invites pets onto its picturesque patio overlooking Marguerite Lake. But Scottsdale isn’t purely dog-eat-dog. If you’re looking to hang out with the feline set, check out La Gattara Cat Lounge and Boutique. Visitors can have coffee with cats, play cards with cats, even do yoga with cats. It’s a cat lover’s paradise.
